About this tool
The Hash Generator is a free online tool that computes cryptographic hashes of any text, directly in your browser. Paste or type any string and get its SHA-256, SHA-512, SHA-1, or MD5 hash in one click.
How it works
1
Enter your text
Type or paste any string. Multi-line input is fine.
2
Choose an algorithm
Click MD5, SHA-1, SHA-256, or SHA-512. For security, SHA-256 is the modern default.
3
Copy the hex hash
The hash appears as a hexadecimal string. Copy it with one click.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a hash and how is it different from encryption? v
A hash is a one-way function: you can compute hash(text) but you cannot reverse it. Encryption is two-way.
Which algorithm should I use? v
For security: SHA-256 or SHA-512. For password hashing: use bcrypt, scrypt, or Argon2 instead.
Is it safe to paste my password here? v
Technically yes, everything runs in your browser. But for real password storage, use a password-hashing function.
Why does a small change produce a totally different hash? v
This is the avalanche effect - a core property of cryptographic hash functions.
Does it work for large files? v
Currently this tool works on text input only. For large binary files, use sha256sum on Linux or CertUtil on Windows.
Is this free? v
Completely free, no signup, no tracking.
