About the category

The Security category is a workspace for generating and checking cryptographic material: random passwords, passphrases, PINs, cryptographic hashes, HMAC signatures, and quick checks. All generation happens locally in your browser using the Web Crypto API - the same primitives used by TLS, HTTPS, and modern security software.

How to choose a tool

1
If you need a strong password
Use the Password Generator. Set the length (16-20 recommended), toggle character types, and optionally exclude similar characters.
2
If you need to hash a string or verify a checksum
Use the Hash Generator. SHA-256 is the modern default; SHA-512 is stronger; MD5 and SHA-1 are shown for legacy compatibility.
3
If you need to test password strength
Use the Password Generator's entropy meter - it shows bits of entropy and estimated crack time.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Base64 encryption? v
No. Base64 is encoding, not encryption. Anyone can decode it instantly. Never use Base64 to protect passwords or secrets - use real encryption like AES.
Should I use MD5 or SHA-1 for passwords? v
No. For password storage, use bcrypt, scrypt, or Argon2 - they are deliberately slow, which makes brute-force attacks impractical. MD5 and SHA-1 are cryptographically broken for security use.
How long should my password be? v
16 characters for most accounts, 20+ for critical ones (email, banking, password manager). Length matters more than complexity - a 20-character lowercase password is stronger than an 8-character mixed-case one.
Is the password generator safe to use? v
Yes. Generation runs entirely in your browser with crypto.getRandomValues(). No password is ever transmitted. You can even disconnect from the internet and the generator still works.
What is entropy and how is it measured? v
Entropy measures the unpredictability of a password in bits. A 16-character password using upper, lower, digits, and symbols has about 105 bits - roughly 10^31 combinations. Even at 100 billion guesses per second, that's over 10^14 years to crack.
Can I use these tools to hash file content? v
Currently the Hash Generator works on text input. For file hashing, open the file, copy its content, and paste it here. For large binary files, use a dedicated tool like sha256sum on Linux or CertUtil on Windows.
